Just for the beauty of it / Sztuka dla sztuki

The summer is rather lazy this year and not in a hurry to bring us tropical temperatures. So what do I do when the weather outside is chilly, besides running? I watch movies. Yesterday I recalled “Monsters” by Gareth Edwards. It’s a low budget drama in the s-f convention. I like this movie very much, because of its conclusion and ending. There, probably, is no happy ending in this film. After watching it, it is up to the spectator to interpret what, if anything happened next.

But what hit me the most is the rating the movie has on an influential Polish website – Filmweb. It’s only 5.7/10. Why? – I asked myself. And then I figured. The film had a trailer which suggested that it will be an action movie with a love-story plot. Well, it isn’t. This is a specific kind of road-movie. With the classical assumption that the characters change during the journey. Both journey on the outside (traveling from point A to B) and on the inside. The inner journey of both of the main characters is different. On one end we have a guy who can manage in a foreign country, in poor housing conditions, who can make quick decisions and does not hesitate, but he cannot manage his personal life. On the other end we have a girl who wants to walk her own path in life, but she can’t decide whether she wants to be a wife or maybe something else. She thinks she’s powerless against the expectations and hopes that are pin on her. During the journey they learn from each other. And eventually a feeling appears…
So if you’re looking for a quiet and giving to think movie, this is the one.

Why do I write about this? This is the kind of movie that is made from the need of a heart. Two actors, trees, jungle and a campfire. The most expensive thing in the movie is a 3 minute at most, sequence of animated visual-effects monsters. This is the kind of movie which, when you’re watching it, reminds you of a s-f short story. It’s just poetic, and you watch it just for the beauty of it.

To niskobudżetowy dramat w konwencji s-f.

Dlaczego? - zadałam sobie pytanie. I wtedy zrozumiałam. Zwiastun filmu sugerował, że to będzie film akcji z wątkiem miłosnym. No cóż, kto tak myślał, ten się zawiódł. To raczej specyficzny rodzaj filmu drogi.

Dwoje aktorów, drzewa, dżungla i ognisko.
